WHAT IS PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION?

Is the built in safety systems within a building that prevent/stop the passage of smoke or fire without the need for activation. The ASFP definition of passive fire protection is ‘built into the structure to provide stability and into walls and floors to separate the building into areas of manageable risk – compartments'.

Passive fire protection is important within a building as it will help protect the building and assets, occupants and importantly lives, whilst also reduces the risk of spread of fire and smoke to enable people to escape in good time and limit the damage of the building to hopefully deter from a total loss.

Examples of Passive fire protection could be:

  • A fire curtain

  • Fire collar or closure device

  • Fire batt

  • Intumescent coatings

As well as ensuring the level of Passive Fire protection is correct and adequate in a building it is equally important to ensure the installing company and installer are suitably qualified, have the correct technical experience, knowledge and advise available to ensure installation to exact installation guidelines and specification is adhered to ensure the highest performance of the products used.
